VIRTUAL COLONOSCOPY

Offered at our 5203 Vernon Ave. S. Location

Virtual Colonoscopy is the latest test for detecting cancer and polyps in the colon (large intestine).  A Multi-slice CT scanner creates a high-resolution, three-dimensional representation of the colon, allowing the radiologist to evaluate the entire length of the colon.  The radiologist also evaluates the surrounding organs for abnormalities.

Patient Preparation

You will be given a list of foods to avoid two days prior to yoru exam.  Please eat a low residue diet two days before the procedure.  You will also be given a laxative.  Most patients report that the preparations are easy to follow and do not interfere with normal life activities.

Patient Experience

Carbon dioxide is introduced gently through a small flexible rubber tube placed at the end of the colon to inflate the colon so the walls are not touching.  Since the gut quickly absorbs carbon dioxide, you will not have the discomfort of excess gas.

A CT scan is taken while you lie on your back, and once again on your stomach.  This allows any fluid in the colon to move from one side to the other, creating the best possible pictures of the entire colon.  A virtual colonoscopy typically lasts less than 20 minutes.

After your Exam

A board certified radiologist will interpret your virtual colonoscopy images and the findings will be sent to your healthcare provider.  Your healthcare provider will contact you to discus the results.
