Dr. Sheldon R.  Burns joined Edina Family Physicians in 2000.  He has over 29 years of clinical experience.  Areas of special interest in addition to Family Practice include Obstetric Care and Sports Medicine.  He is a member of the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians and was a finalist for MN Family Physician of the year in 2003 and received their annual Merit Award for outstanding contributions to family practice in 1985.  

Dr. Burns was inducted into the Minnesota “Wall of Fame” at the National Sports Center, Blaine,  Minnesota for "Contributions as a Minnesotan to the United States Olympic Teams.  He received the Larry Neumann Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota Athletic Trainers Association in 1996.   He was also recognized in the Journal of American Medical Association in 1992 for the discovery of the largest reported outbreak of food borne illness from a commercial airline flight affecting twenty-four states and four countries.

During his education Dr. Burns received his Bachelor of Arts degree with High Honors and Distinction from Hamline University in 1971.  He attended medical school at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis until 1974.  He completed his residency at the University of Minnesota and was awarded “Specialist” designation in the areas of Family Practice, Emergency Medicine and Sports Medicine.

Dr. Burns personal hobbies include travel and sporting events.
